FLORENCE, Ore. — Fifty years is a lot of time to cover, but that’s what we’re doing in our “50 for 50″ project, one story for each of the 50 years KEZI 9 News has been on the air.
This one is a whale of a tale.
Some of you will remember this story from November 1970, and it will be new for the rest.
You’ll be forgiven if you don’t quite believe it.
The carcass of an eight-ton grey whale had washed up on a beach near Florence.
Back in the day, Oregon beaches were under the jurisdiction of the department of transportation and not the ODFW.
Someone at ODOT had a brilliant idea to blow it up.
Big mistake, but that’s exactly what they did on Nov. 12, 1970.
