EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon running standout Steve Prefontaine was just coming into his own when he lost his life in Eugene.
It was 1975, three years after he finished fourth in the 5,000 meters at the Olympic Games in Munich.
To his closest friends, he was an example of the best that the world of sports has to offer.
