EUGENE, Ore. — If anyone can be credited with making Eugene “Track Town U.S.A.”, it’s Steve Prefontaine.
And it’s amazing he accomplished so much in such a short time.
He was the running world’s James Dean.
He was a bit of a rebel, but also supremely talented.
The kid from Coos Bay set the track world on fire in the 1970s.
Though Pre had shown early promise as a high school runner, he didn’t make his mark until he started running for Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon.
