51-Year Coaching Vet Retires

EUGENE, Ore. — North Eugene High School will celebrate a coach Tuesday night, who’s retiring after more than half a century of coaching.

Jim Lockard has served as head coach or assistant head coach in the 4J School District for the last 51 years. A majority of that time was at North Eugene. He’ll spend his last night of his career as assistant coach under former player Ryan Brummett, who’s now the head coach at North Eugene and probably one of Lockard’s biggest fans.

“One of the biggest things that I’m going to remember from him is how unselfish he is. There’s things behind the scenes that he does for kids that people would never know, whether it’s buying them shoes or taking them to practice, and just being part of their lives,” Brummett said.

Ceremonies start at 6:30 p.m.at North Eugene High School, just before the varsity boys game.
