Loud Ducks Fans Can Damage Ears

EUGENE, Ore. — Ducks fans are loud and proud when inside Autzen Stadium; but, experts say that might not be such a good thing.

Autzen’s considered one of the loudest stadiums in college football, with the noise level reaching 127 decibels.

Doctors from the Eugene Hearing and Speech Center say 120 decibels is the threshold for discomfort. Anything beyond that could be dangerous and painful.

“It’s great they can have that spirit there and keep the team going; but, really the fans should be trying to protect their hearing at those levels as it doesn’t take very long, just a couple of minutes, can do permanent damage to your hearing,” said Dr. Peter Succo.

Dr. Succo suggests sound proof earmuffs or earplugs to be safe. He says custom-fitted ear plugs work best.
