An 8.0 earthquake registered off the Solomon Island chain in the South Pacific early Wednesday (UTC).
Five people have been reported dead and several others were injured.
The earthquake triggered a tsunami that impacted some inhabited areas of the Solomon Islands. There were reports of a 3-foot wave moving ashore and damaging structures.
Many 4.0-6.6 magnitude aftershocks continued to rumble several hours after the initial earthquake.
Neither the Hawaiian Islands nor the US western coastline were ever under a threat of a tsunami according to the West Coast and Alaskan Tsunami Warning Center.
