Algae Found in Dorena Reservoir

Near COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A health advisory has been issued for Dorena Reservoir due to high levels of blue-green algae.

Health officials say the water can be harmful to humans and animals, so all contact with the water should be avoided.

Campers and visitors are being warned that toxins cannot be removed by boiling, filtering, or treating the water with camping style filters. People who draw in-home water from the reservoir are advised to use an alternate source until further notice.

A similar warning is still in effect for Dexter Reservoir.

What is the problem with Blue-Green Algae? I was looking to find out what to beware of and was surprised to find that blue-green algae has alleged health benefits and is even sold in supplements.
