Arrest in Freeway Overpass Rock Throw

RICE HILL, Ore. — Oregon State Police have made an arrest in the case from November of last year in which a man allegedly threw a rock off of an I-5 overpass and hit a passing car.

The suspect arrested is Mathew McKinney, 19, of Sutherlin.

On Nov. 26, 2012, police say McKinney threw a rock off the overpass that struck two University of Oregon students, causing severe damage to their car and knocking the driver out cold. The passenger of the car was unable to take control of the vehicle as it crashed, finally coming to a rest facing oncoming traffic in their lane.

McKinney has been charged with a litany of counts including assault, throwing an object off an overpass and criminal mischief. He is being held in the Douglas County Jail as is awaiting arraignment.
