The flames were spotted by a driver around 10:15 p.m. Thursday night and quickly extinguished by fire units.
It appeared a pallet of cardboard boxes had been set on fire and shoved against the building, a district official said.
He estimated the damage was around $1,000.
“When I got here last night, there was a 24-pack container for beer, and there were a number of beer cans scattered in and amongst the bushes,” said Steve Howard, 4J mechanical division supervisor.
More worrisome, he said, was the enormous stack of flammable building supplies outside Churchill High.
The school, located on Bailey Hill Road is an alternative education program for high school students with behavioral challenges. The school district is offering a $500 reward for information on the case.
