CORVALLIS, Ore. — Anthony Rodrigues Jr. was arraigned Monday afternoon at the Benton County Courthouse. In an affidavit from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, more details are emerging about the suspect.
Rodrigues sat emotionless as he faced a judge. Deputies say that’s a far cry from his behavior when he was arrested early Saturday morning.
“The driver of the vehicle was very distraught, sobbing, crying, tearful, visibly shaken,” said Undersheriff Scott Jackson.
The 33-year-old is charged with nine counts, including attempted murder and unlawful use of a weapon.
A Benton County sheriff’s deputy pulled Rodrigues over on Highway 99W in Corvallis for driving recklessly; he was reportedly swerving in an out of lanes and nearly crashing into a ditch. That’s when investigators say the deputy discovered Rodrigues had murder on his mind.
According to an affidavit, the suspect told the deputy he bought a gun in Eugene, and he was on his way to Philomath to kill a couple and their daughter. When the deputy asked about the gun, Rodrigues said he was “in a rage” and he was going to “gut them up.” Also in the report, Rodrigues confessed to raping the couple’s daughter 13 years ago. Investigators are trying to confirm that.
Jackson said, “There’s a lot of information to weed out and sort through and to confirm, and I cannot comment on anything or a possible motivation right now.”
The sheriff’s office says Rodrigues also told the arresting deputy he was high on meth and he first bought the gun to kill his father, who lives in Veneta. When he couldn’t find his father, he decided to drive to Philomath to execute his deadly plan.
Anthony Rodrigues Jr. is being held at Benton County Jail on $225,000 bail.
