Billboard Contrasts with Eugene Mission

EUGENE, Ore. — A billboard near the Eugene Mission is raising some eyebrows. The sign, directly behind the mission, prominently declares “There is no such thing as a free lunch.”

Of course, one of the functions of the Eugene Mission is to provide free lunches for those in need, as well as a place to sleep.

“Obviously some people have issues with other people eating and sustaining a lifestyle. Cascade Policy? I think I’ll go home and figure this one out on the web site and see what they’re all about,” said resident Rick Jackson.

The sign was paid for by the Cascade Policy Institute, a Portland-based think tank.

I have no idea who the Cascade Policy Institute are or what their purpose is, but of course they are right about there being no free lunch. In order to eat or sleep at the Eugene Mission, you are subjected to the religious nonsense they also serve. So of course there is a price to paid for taking advantage of their facility.

There’s not much to figure out; Friedman is an influential economist and the Cascade Policy Institute is a libertarian public policy organization. It’s not exactly hard to see where they’re going with that.
