EUGENE, Ore. — A surprising development as the Cottage Grove man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend appears in Lane County Court for the first time Monday on murder charges. David Bowen pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Bowen sat quietly next to his attorney as the judge quickly went over the charges. The arraignment only lasted a few minutes.
Bowen is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend, Tammy Borda. Borda, was living in Beaverton with her daughter at the time. Bowen told family she was last seen leaving his home with her bags on Dec. 2. Last week, investigators searched Bowen’s home for several days and then officers found Borda’s body at an undisclosed location Thursday. Bowen faces charges of murder and tampering with evidence.
Defense attorney Elizabeth Baker said, “It was the defendant’s intention today to enter a plea to two of the minor charges in this matter so that he could proceed on his primary case and he does have a claim of self-defense on that charge.”
The documents say he also faces charges of abusing a corpse and knowingly trying to get rid of the body so as it was unavailable. Cottage Grove Police and the Lane County District Attorney’s office are still not releasing much information on this case. The prosecution says all the documents requested remain sealed at this time.
The case was assigned to a judge, who will oversee the rest of the court proceedings. That said, when Bowen is expected back in court is still to be determined.
