Branch Library Safe from Budget Cuts

3-5 library budget meetingEUGENE, Ore. — The give and take of budget cuts will no longer include the closure of the Sheldon Branch Library.

The Eugene Budget Committee voted Wednesday night to have City Manager John Ruiz keep the branch library open.

This was all a part of the Ruiz’s strategy to cut $2.5 million from next year’s budget. There were two amendments included with the passage of his strategy. Part of that included saving the Sheldon Branch Library.

The downtown library hours are still expected to be cut.

The move to save the Sheldon Branch Library is a one-time deal with the hopes there will be a long-term solution.

“The goal being that we and the committee would work towards a potential library levy and some long-term sustainable strategies would be examined for library services going forward,” said Laura Illig, Eugene Budget Committee Chair.

Ruiz will use Wednesday’s vote as he drafts his final budget proposal. That’s expected next month.

Because the committee approved the city manager’s suggestions, Thursday’s budget meeting is cancelled.
