EUGENE, Ore. — Are you planning on celebrating New Year’s Eve with a glass of bubbly?
Taxi companies are adding extra cars on the road to ensure people get a safe ride home, but that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed a ride.
Cab companies say New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest nights of the year. On a typical Friday night, they get about 100 calls an hour. But on this Tuesday, they expect that to triple.
They say the best thing to do to ensure a safe ride home is to stay in touch with your driver before your night begins.
“When you first get a ride to wherever you’re going to, it’s always a good idea to get the direct phone number to the person who dropped you off because they’re more likely going to be easier to contact than the dispatch because you’ve got thousands of people calling the dispatch number,” said David Bowden, Eugene Hybrid Taxi.
There are other options besides cabs that are free. Transportation service RIDE Eugene is offering free rides to the first 10 callers beginning at 10 p.m. You can also schedule pickups here: https://www.facebook.com/RIDEEugene
The designated driver shuttle will take University of Oregon students home for free. Info here: http://pages.uoregon.edu/asuodds/
If you do decide to take a cab, expect wait times of up to an hour long.
