Cars Trapped on Collapsed Bridge

cars trappedGREER, South Carolina (CNN) — A Greer man feels lucky to be alive after being trapped in a car on a collapsed bridge Saturday night.

It happened on Memorial Drive Extension in Greer during torrential rains, which caused a culvert under a bridge to overflow and weaken the ground under the road.

The road collapsed, causing two cars to fall into a hole.

Larry Cooper says he doesn’t know why or how he survived.

Cooper says the other car had three people inside. One of those passengers had to be rescued further down stream. Cooper walked away with cuts and bruises.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation reports the pipe that pushed the stream under the road gave way because too much water was rushing through it at the time.
