Since January 1, 174 bikes have been reported stolen in Eugene. That’s up 64 percent from last year, when 106 bikes were stolen in the first three months of 2012.

A total of 848 bicycles were reported stolen in 2012, showing an increase in stolen bikes during the last three quarters. EPD says it’s worried that there could see the same increase in 2013.

Eugene police offer some advice to make prevent bikes from being stolen.

Officers say to bicyclist should register their bicycles online. After filling out the online form, bicyclist will be sent a sticker of ownership. If the bike is stolen, EPD will already have the description to file a report.

Bicyclist should use substantial locks, such as a U-Bolt style, to lock up bikes. EPD reported that many bikes have been stolen from inside garages, storage sheds and apartments, so bikes should be locked with strong locks at all times.

Students at the University of Oregon can also register their bikes with the UO Police Department on campus, at 1319 E. 15th St. or by phone (541) 346-2919.

5th Avenue will be shut down between Washington and Jefferson streets until Friday, May 24. Crews will be repairing deteriorating portions of the street.

Pearl Street will also be closed between 18th and 19th avenues for several weeks in order for crews to lay down new concrete.

Election officials have been busy processing the hundreds of ballots arriving daily.

Voters in Lane County have several key issues on the ballot, including whether to approve a public safety levy, a bond for the 4J School District and whether to approve a proposed $10 city service fee in Eugene.

As of Monday morning voter turnout in Lane County was 25.7 percent. Voter turnout it Douglas County was 22 percent, Coos County was 18 percent, Benton County was 13 percent and Linn County was 12 percent.

To be counted ballots must be returned to county elections offices or designated drop boxes no later than 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Click It or Ticket campaign will run through June 2, and will include law enforcement agencies at the state, county and city levels.

Last year in Oregon, 61 people were killed in crashes who were not wearing their seat belts.

Over 1,000 children under the age of four were injured in traffic accidents in Oregon, and a third of those were not properly restrained.

The Eugene Fire Department will also be hosting a free child safety seat inspection clinic on May 30 from 4-6 p.m. at 1725 W. 2nd Ave.

EUGENE, Ore. — Two robbers held up a BJ’s Restaurant on Coburg Road near Willakenzie Road just before midnight, Saturday. The restaurant was closed at the time, but employees were still inside.

The daughter of the restaurant’s general manager told KEZI 9 News what happened.

“He said that when the guy came out to take out the trash, a guy put a gun in his back and took him in and the employees that were there, he had them all lay face down,” said Chelsea Navaro.

Police say the men, one black and one white, were wearing ski masks and dark clothing. The description of the men is very similar to the description of the robbers at the McDonald’s restaurant, next door, two and a half weeks ago.

The two incidents had staff at the nearby Buddy’s Diner very concerned. They say, they’re not taking any chances.

“We were just talking about how to make this place safer because a lot of times, it’s just the two us, two girls. We’re here by ourselves before anyone else is here,” Navaro said.

“Make sure doors are locked at night, always closed, and make sure there are two people taking the garbage out and always somebody walking somebody else to the car,” said server Theresa Lamb.

Employees at Buddy’s Diner worry robbers are hitting nearby homes as well.

Both restaurant robberies are still under investigation. Anyone with information can contact the Eugene Police Department at (541) 682-5111.

No Kill Lane County was also at the park during the event to protest Greenhill and their policies. No Kill Lane County’s main message was to make it aware that the shelter is not a no kill shelter.

Eugene police arrived to diffuse the situation.

Bark in the Park is Greenhill’s largest fundraiser of the year, and this year was no exception. The run and walk drew more than 1,000 people and 500 dogs, the largest crowd the shelter’s ever seen at the event.

Vendors lined the park showcasing their pet friendly products.

The shelter said it makes the event a fun place for everyone, pets included.

“A 5K run, 2K walk really enables everybody to participate, both athletes as well as families,” said Sasha Elliott, Greenhill Humane Society Spokesperson.

It was a cloudy start to Sunday, but the skies finally broke by the afternoon. Temperatures climbed into the mid 60s inland and upper 50s along the coast.

High pressure will be in control Monday; this means mostly clear skies and high temperatures climbing into the mid 70s inland, low 60s along the coast.

A large low pressure system will move in Tuesday afternoon and spin just of the coast during the rest of the weak. This storm will be like most winter storms; it will bring scattered showers across the area, snow showers above 3,000 feet, gusty winds and colder temperatures. High temps will fall well below average in the mid to upper 50s Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s not out of the question to see a few thunderstorms as well, as the center of the low sit along the coast.

The storm looks to move out of our area by early Saturday.

Women in Blue’s a weekly training course that teaches women what it takes to become an officer, in hopes that some would eventually apply for jobs within the department.

“It’s been designed around helping women be successful in the application process as well as giving them some insight into the police,” said Melinda McLaughlin, EPD spokesperson.

Many of the participants said they initially wanted to see what police officers do, but now are considering careers in law enforcement.

Organizers say they’re slowly trying to rebuild and improve the program.

“We are looking to get back to kind of our quality service, make sure that we serve the kids that we have in the program as best as we can,” said Jay Baughman, Executive Director Big Brothers Big Sisters.

The organization offers a number of different mentor programs including pairing high school students with younger kids.
