ADAIR VILLAGE, Ore. — Oregon State Police is continuing its investigation into the cause of a traffic crash Monday afternoon.

OSP says around 12:25 p.m. a Honda Accord was traveling northbound on Highway 99W near Ryals Avenue. The car, driven by Rachelle Collier, 29, of Albany, signaled for a right turn onto Ryals Avenue. As the car slowed for the turn, the motorcycle behind attempted to pass on the right but ended up colliding with the side of the car. Both occupants were ejected for the motorcycle as it traveled off the highway into tall grass.

The driver of the motorcycle, John D. Whitewater Jr., 18, of Corvallis, was transported to the Samaritan Region Medical Center in Corvallis with serious injuries. The 14-year-old female passenger was transported to the same Medical Center with minor injuries. Both were wearing protective helmets.

Collier and her 3-week-old infant passenger were not injured in the crash.

OSP troopers from the Albany and Salem Area continue to investigate the crash.

PORTLAND/EUGENE, Ore. — On Saturday, friends and family gathered to remember a University of Oregon athlete who died in a drowning accident the week before. The funeral for 21-year-old Alex Rovello was held in Portland that afternoon. So many people arrived to pay their respects, the church brought in a production company to pipe the video and sound into overflow rooms. There were hundreds of pictures, signed posters and tennis memorabilia laid out in his honor.

Rovello was a star tennis player in high school and later at the University of Oregon. Many of the friends Rovello made in college, including fellow athletes, classmates and even staff, spent the day sharing their memories of him as a means of coping with their loss. It was a tough time for all those who were close to him, but instead of focusing on what happened to Rovello and his standout tennis skills, those who knew him insisted the he needed to be remembered for the simply amazing human being that he was.

Rovello’s teammates said he was a heck of a competitor.

“As a tennis player, he was a fighter. I could always see it in his eyes if he was going to win said,” UO tennis player and friend Robin Cambier said. “He hated to lose, so he would do whatever he could on the court to win.”

Off the court, Rovello used that same energy to win over his friends.

“Alex wasn’t just a teammate or classmate, but I considered him like my American brother,” Cambier said.

School was no different. He gained his professors’ respect with ease.

“He would come see me every week to make sure he was keeping up with all his work and he was always just so happy and funny. He’d make me laugh. He was just full of life. He was a terrific young man,” said Professor Dan Morrison, UO School of Journalism and Communication.

His impact to this community was evident in the outpouring of support that followed his death.

“Athletics, Student Life and the School of Journalism and Communication have all come together to make sure that people can get up to Portland for this memorial service and properly remember Alex,” said Dean Tim Gleason, UO School of Journalism and Communication.

Repeatedly described as classy, humble and genuine, friends said Rovello had many fans; it wasn’t because of his talent, but because of his character. Many fans and friends said that’s what they will all miss most.

“We’ll miss him just in general, in the locker room, his music, him coming into the locker room, being around always happy,” Cambier said.

Rovello’s family is asking people to donate to a fund in his name. The money donated to the Alex Rovello Memorial-Berkeley Park Tennis Donation Fund will be used to repair and renovate the courts Rovello grew up on. Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank.

Another memorial service will be held in at 6 p.m. on May 22 at Matthew Knight Arena.

The accident happened a little after 8 p.m. Wednesday, near the intersection of Centennial and Anderson.

Paramedics tended to the passenger at the scene before taking him to the hospital.

Police say the driver was drunk and speeding. That’s when the truck he was driving went over a small embankment and hit a tree.

“When we got here the driver was out walking around and the passenger was on the sidewalk on his back, said Sgt. Pete Kirkpatrick with the Springfield Police Department. “Residents heard the accident and told him to stay down until the medics got there.”

The passenger went to the hospital with neck and back injuries. The driver appeared to be okay.

Around 5: 15 p.m., deputies say they received a call from Ryan Orr, 29, of Bend, saying that his climbing partner Kathy Pawelski, 34, of Bend, sustained injuries after falling in the Wherever I May Roam climbing area.

Orr said that Pawelski had fallen about 30 feet while repelling down the rock face. He said they were stuck on a narrow ledge about 300 feet from the ground.

Sheriff’s Deputies, volunteers from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) and the Redmond Fire Department responded to Smith Rock State Park to rescue Pawelski.

Two SAR members climbed to the top of the rock face and repelled down to the climbers’ location. Pawelski was secured to one of the SAR members who rappelled vertically to the rock base. She was transported by a wheeled litter down a 50-degree slope and then on a rubber raft across the Crooked River.

Pawelski was taken by ambulance to the St. Charles Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

NEAR YONCALLA, Ore. — Fire crews fought a 60 acre wildfire Saturday. With hands on the ground and help in the sky, firefighters worked to control the burn.

“We brought in a couple helicopters to help cool stuff off and then we also have a fixed wing aerial observer aircraft in the sky, as well to keep our eyes in the sky and let us know what’s going on,” said Kyle Reed, Fire Prevention Specialist with the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

On the ground, crews let interior logs burn and focused on making sure the outer edge of the fire was cooling off.

“Anything within 20-30 feet of the line today we’re going to start extinguishing all of those smokes and hot spots,” Reed said.

Although fire season hasn’t officially started in Douglas County, the DFPA said it is discouraging any burning.

“We are advising residents not to burn despite the fact that there’s not a burn ban in place, it’s just not very good burning conditions and it doesn’t take much for the fire to get away,” Reed said.

The Andrews Creek fire was not the first wildfire in Douglas County in 2013; last weekend, 12 fires started due to lighting strikes. Even though officials don’t know the cause of the fire yet, they said it could have been a smoldering pile from a lightning strike or it could have started from debris flying around from a backyard burn.

Since everything is drying out, it’s keeping fire crews a bit busier earlier in the year than many would like to be, and could cause the fire season in Douglas County to begin earlier than usual.

EUGENE, Ore. — Five gun safety bills are going back into committee hearing by order of Senate President Peter Courtney, who believes the proposals need more work if they have a chance to pass.

The bills all revolve around gun safety, including Senate bills 347, 421, 699, 700, 713 and 796. The most talked about one is Senate Bill 700, also known as the background check bill.

Courtney says he’s doing this in the interest of seeing the bills succeed, but some legislators are worried this detour could stifle the bill’s potential.

Five gun bills are being re-routed in the Oregon Senate this week, including the background check bill, bills regarding concealed handgun requirements, and other gun safety.

The decision was Courtney’s, who feels the bills wouldn’t get the support he thought they needed.

Courtney said in a statement Monday, “Right now the votes just aren’t there for the gun bills.”

Senator Floyd Prozanski disagrees.

“I actually believe we clearly have the votes for the background check bill based on what it would accomplish,” Prozanski said.

Prozanski chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee that originally passed three of the five bills being discussed to the Senate. He says he believes the bills could pass, particularly Senate Bill 700 regarding stricter background checks for gun owners.

“In the democratic caucus, we had 15 out of 16, and there are at least four areas that are represented currently by Republicans that are known as swing districts, and all of those districts have polled very highly in support of universal background checks,” Prozanski said.

President Courtney, however, thinks they all need more work. He’s sending the five bills in question to the Senate Rules Committee to be negotiated by a work group he’ll put together in hopes that “a bipartisan solution can be reached before the end of the session.”

“I believe the bills as they were drafted and passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee can in fact be passed out of the rules committee for a floor vote at any time. I don’t believe anything will keep that from occurring except for the president saying no,” Prozanski said.

It seems regardless of the means used, Courtney and bill supporters have the same goals in mind–to get the bills passed.

Prozanski says even with the detour to the Senate Rules Committee, he believes the bills can and will pass this session. Others aren’t so sure there’s enough time this time around.
