OMAHA, Neb. – Matt Boyd scattered four hits and struck out 11 in a complete-game gem, silencing Indiana and making a fourth-inning sacrifice fly stand up for Oregon State, as the Beavers staved off elimination with a 1-0 victory over the Hoosiers at TD Ameritrade Park at the College World Series on Wednesday.

OSU, which improved to 16-5 in elimination games under Pat Casey and 4-0 this season, will match up again with Mississippi State on Friday at noon PT. The Bulldogs defeated the Beavers, 5-4, in the opening game in Omaha last Saturday.

Boyd was his usual stellar self on the big stage Wednesday. The senior left-hander guided Oregon State to the first 1-0 shutout at the College World Series since 1985, threw the Beavers’ 12th shutout of the season to tie them with Rice for the national lead, and ended Indiana’s season by holding the Hoosiers without a run for the first time this season.

The Beavers got on the board in the fourth with solid contact on three consecutive pitches. Kavin Keyes led off the inning by lacing a single to center field, his second hit of the game. Ryan Barnes squared around to bunt, but pulled the bat back and doubled down the left field line on the next offering, advancing Keyes to third. Jake Rodriguez completed the series; inside-outing a sacrifice fly to right that scored Keyes to put Oregon State on top, 1-0.

Boyd would make that manufactured run stand. He didn’t face any trouble until the fifth inning, when Indiana got its first hit and also moved its only runner into scoring position. Michael Basil broke up Boyd’s no-no with a bloop single to right field. Dustin DeMuth attempted to sacrifice Basil over, but his bunt died down the third base line, allowing him to reach safely.

Facing his first bit of difficulty, Boyd settled down and induced a flyout off the bat of Casey Smith and retired Chad Clark on a weak popup to third base to end the frame. In his first four innings of work, the Beaver lefty tallied seven strikeouts and only allowed three balls to be put in play. Both of his walks didn’t amount to much, as Boyd picked off his second and third runners of the season – Chris Sujka in the first and Justin Cureton in the third.

Indiana’s Cureton walked to lead off the sixth, but Boyd got Sujka to pop up for the first out and then worked the NCAA’s third most prolific home run hitter to a 1-1 count before forcing Kyle Schwarber into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Boyd worked a clean seventh, allowed a harmless Casey Smith single in the eighth and surrendered a two-out Sam Travis single in the ninth before Nick Ramos grounded out to Keyes at third base to end the game.

This result was the 18th 1-0 shutout and the 103rd overall in College World Series history. The last came in 1985 when Howard Hilton, Tim Deitz and Fred Farwell combined to do the same for Arkansas against South Carolina on May 31, 1985.

The 11 strikeouts for Boyd were a College World Series record for Oregon State and were just one shy of his career-high of 12 from May 3 of this season, when he fanned 12 California Golden Bears. Boyd also tossed a complete-game in a 1-0 win for the Beavers against Utah on April 12.

Boyd’s effort out-shined Big Ten Pitcher of the Year Aaron Slegers, who also threw all nine innings for Indiana. The last time the College World Series had two pitchers throw complete games in the same contest was on June 17, 2006 between Clemson (Stephen Faris) and North Carolina (Robert Woodard).

Courtesy: OSU Sports Information

OMAHA, Neb. – Oregon State improved to 3-0 this postseason, and 15-5 all-time under Pat Casey, in elimination games in an 11-4 College World Series win over Louisville Monday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park, giving the Beavers a school-record 51st win of the season.

Oregon State players started the hashtag #RefuseToLose during regional competition, and they used that mantra in back-to-back wins over Kansas State to advance to Omaha and again on Monday against the Cardinals to remain alive at the College World Series.

The Beavers will play the loser of Mississippi State-Indiana at 7 p.m. CT (5 p.m. PT) on Wednesday in another elimination game that will be televised on ESPN2.

Lefty Ben Wetzler allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings and moved to 10-1 to join Andrew Moore (14-1) and Matt Boyd (10-4) with double-digits victories, the first time Oregon State has had three 10-game winners in a season since 2007.

Scott Schultz pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up four hits and a run, to close out the game.

Michael Conforto continued his torrid pace at the plate in Omaha by going 2-for-4 with an RBI double in the seventh inning and has now reached base in eight of his 10 plate appearances at the College World Series.

Andy Peterson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and Tyler Smith and Max Gordon each collected two hits with Gordon contributing two RBIs and two runs.

Gordon was hit by a pitch to open the third inning and scored from first when Smith doubled down the left field line. Peterson reached on a bunt single and Conforto drew a walk to load the bases before Louisville second baseman Zach Lucas threw the ball away trying to start a double play, which allowed two runs to score and give the Beavers a 3-0 lead.

Oregon State (51-12) loaded the bases again in the fourth inning and scored two runs when Dylan Davis beat out a squibber down the third base line that plated Gordon and Peterson. After Danny Hayes walked, the Beavers added two runs when shortstop Sutton Whiting threw the ball over first baseman Zak Wasserman’s head.

Ryan Barnes was hit by a pitch, Jake Rodriguez walked to score a run and Gordon knocked in a pair with a single through the left side that gave Oregon State a comfortable 10-0 lead. It was the 18th time the Beavers have batted around in an inning this season.

The seven runs in the inning are the most by a team since the College World Series moved to TD Ameritrade Park from Rosenblatt Stadium in 2011.

Louisville (51-14) got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Lucas, but Wetzler induced a double play to end the rally. He gave up three singles in the sixth but got out of the inning without a run being scored with by the help of a double play and flyout.

The Cardinals added three runs in the seventh inning on a hit by pitch and walk that chased Wetzler before Scott Schultz allowed a two-run double to Adam Engel and an RBI single by Ty Young.

Courtesy: Oregon State Sports Infomation

OMAHA, Neb. – Danny Hayes had a potential game-winning home run caught at the warning track and Michael Conforto became the first Oregon State player to get four hits at the NCAA College World Series, but the Beavers dropped the opening game to Mississippi State, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.

Tyler Smith singled to open the ninth inning and advanced to second when Conforto walked with one out. Hayes hit a 2-2 curveball that looked to be gone, but fell just a few feet short of the fence and into right fielder Hunter Renfroe’s glove for the final out.

After dropping the first game of the College World Series to Miami in 2006, the Beavers battled back to win their first of back-to-back national championships. They will have to do the same to claim their third national title in eight years when they face the loser of Indiana-Louisville at 2 p.m. CT (noon PT) on Monday.

Mississippi State got the game-winning runs on a two-out double by Wes Rea that knocked in Alex Detz and Renfroe who reached on back-to-back singles.

Matt Boyd, who was making his second consecutive relief appearance, was saddled with the loss when a line drive ricocheted off his back on a liner by Renfroe before Rea’s double.

Conforto showed everyone he is one of the nation’s best players by going 4-for-4 from the plate with two doubles, an RBI and run, and made several spectacular plays in left field, including throwing out Sam Frost at the plate when he attempted to score on a flyout in the second inning.

Freshman All-American Andrew Moore allowed six hits and three runs in 7 1/3 innings but was denied his school-record 15th win of the season when the Bulldogs rallied in the eighth inning.

Oregon State (50-12) took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Michael Conforto knocked in Tyler Smith, who reached on a throwing error, with a double and scored on an RBI single by Danny Hayes.

The Bulldogs (49-18) answered with three runs in the top of the second with the help of a double, two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch. The inning could have been worse for the Beavers but Conforto gunned down Sam Frost at the plate when he attempted to score on a flyout.

The Beavers tied the game at 3 in the fourth when Kavin Keyes hit a ball down the line that got by the left fielder for a triple that scored Hayes, who led off the inning with a walk.

Oregon State took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning when Andy Peterson singled, moved to third on a double by Conforto and scored on a groundout by Dylan Davis.

The game was played in front of 24,473, the eighth-largest crowd in TD Ameritrade Park history.

Oregon State had won seven straight games at the College World Series between 2006 and 2007 at Rosenblatt Stadium to claim back-to-back national championships. Saturday was the first time the Beavers played at TD Ameritrade Park, which became the new home of college baseball’s biggest stage in 2011.

EUGENE — The Emeralds offense struggled all night, mustering just four hits against four Boise pitchers. Eugene starter Erik Cabrera pitched through leadoff doubles in each of the first two innings, but couldn’t escape a 5-run third inning.

It all started with a leadoff single from the number nine hitter David Bote that started a string of five straight Hawks to reach base. All told in the 3rd, Cabrera allowed four singles, a HBP, a walk and the big hit an RBI double from RF Kevin Encarnacion. Cabrera lasted just 2.2 innings allowing six hits and five runs although he did strike out six Hawks hitters.

James Pugliese kept the Ems off balance for five innings by allowing just three hits and striking out seven to pick up the win. Eugene could not take advantage of a pair of hit batsmen in the 3rd inning. Cade Kreuter had a chance in the 4th with a runner on third and two down but a line drive up the middle was knocked down by Pugliese who made the play to end the threat. Three Boise relievers combined to close out the final four innings giving up just one hit and one walk. Franmil Reyes was the lone bright spot for the Ems offensively going 2-4 with a single and a double.

The game was played before a sellout crowd of 4,265. The Ems will take on the Boise Hawks Saturday night in game 2 of this 3 game series starting at 7:05pm.
