Wendesday’s Weather Discussion from Chief Meteorologist Justin Stapleton

Overall, the weather will stay unsettled Thursday and Friday, but the rain should start to taper off on Thursday and Friday. That said, there is a chance the storm may reform in Washington and keep the rain chances coming through Friday but most of it should hold in the Northern end of the state. With more sunshine seen by Friday afternoon, highs will be back into the low 70s.

The weekend looks nice and warm to officially welcome in summer in the Northwest. High pressure brings back sunny skies Saturday and early Sunday and highs will push back into the upper 70s and low 80s. Next week, another good-looking storm is brewing for a wet and cool start to the work week!

Have a great Thursday!

Wednesday’s Weather Discussion from Meteorologist Melissa Frey:

Ironically, after a very mild spring season, the final full day of spring will actually look more like early spring than summer. An area of low pressure is slowly making its way east today and this will keep showers going off and on all day. A fairly heavy batch of showers moved through the Eugene/Springfield metro area between 9 and 10 this morning. We also have a very chilly air mass in place which will hold our highs to the mid 60s. Thundershowers are again across the Cascades and in central Oregon.

By Thursday this storm will be on to the east and high pressure will return. Thursday will be the transition day with partly sunny skies and highs near 70°. Friday will be even warmer with highs in the mid 70s. I can’t rule out a passing isolated showers either Thursday or Friday, but it’s more likely than not that it will be dry.

By the weekend high pressure will be in full force. High swill be back near 80° with sunny skies overhead.

The next series of storms begins to move in Sunday afternoon. This should drop out temps for early next week and keep the rain going.

Have a great day!

Tuesday’s Weather Discussion from Chief Meteorologist Justin Stapleton

Some light sprinkles so far into Tuesday night, otherwise, it’s been cool and cloudy with mountain thunderstorms firing up. Most of the showers that sparked by late afternoon will slowly fade as we head overnight tonight and we’ll be left with a mix of clouds and clear skies with most of the rain at the coast. Although a few showers might move in early Wednesday, most of the action will be in the afternoon and evening.

Tomorrow the center of the storm will work inland into Northern Oregon bringing rain showers, not much in the way of sun breaks, more mountain thunderstorms and a cool afternoon with highs only in the mid 60s. Overall, the weather will stay unsettled Thursday and Friday, but the rain should start to taper off on Thursday and Friday. That said, there is a chance the storm may reform in Washington and keep the rain chances coming through Friday but most of it should hold in the Northern end of the state.
A beautiful sunny Father’s Day for dads everywhere is leading into a nice night overall. Some clouds mixed in with clear skies and most of the thunderstorms that fired up in the late afternoon, should head north into the Northern Cascades. Winds are starting to shift to a southerly flow, thus lows will fall into the low 50s tonight and likely stay mild and kind of muggy the next couple of nights.

Monday we’ll see another day of mid to upper 70s with a “milky” sky- high clouds streaming in ahead of the next storm. The coast may see some drizzle throughout the morning, while more late afternoon thunderstorms are going to fire up in the Cascades. The best news is U. of O. commencement ceramonies should be dry and temps likely in the mid to upper 60s.

Tuesday through Thursday, the storm slowly shifts inland, bringing rain showers at times, sun breaks, and a cooler couple of days with highs back in the mid to upper 60s. Wednesday morning appears to be the wettest timeframe as the center of the storm will be moving through, and the mountains will see a chance for some light thunderstorms each day as well.

Thursday and into the weekend, high pressure takes hold once again, and we’re back to a summer forecast. Morning clouds and highs moving back into the mid to upper 70s! Oh, and the grass pollen will crank back up again!

Have a great Monday!

METEOROLOGIST MARISA WOLOSZYN’S FORECAST DISCUSSION:

A large low pressure system is spinning out over the Pacific Ocean to our west. This low will impact our weather for Father’s Day (Sunday) and Monday by filtering in high clouds throughout the day. With that said, Father’s day will start off with some fog, but lead to mostly sunny skies by the afternoon. High temps will be in the low 60s along the coast, mid 70s for the valley and low 80s for the Umpqua.

High temperatures will be about the same Monday, but more cloud will push in during the afternoon.

Showers will start Monday night and continue through late Wednesday as the low moves onshore and across the area. High temps will cool off into the upper 60s inland and to 60 degrees along the coast for Tuesday and Wednesday.

High pressure rebuilds during the end of the week; warmer and sunnier weather is in store of the weekend.

Have a fantastic Father’s Day!

Friday’s Weather Discussion from Chief Meteorologist Justin Stapleton

Sunny skies returned Friday with highs back into the low to mid 70s and we’re back on our way to an even warmer Saturday forcast with sunny skies and highs moving back into the mid to upper 70s. Spots in the Umpqua will move back into the mid 80s for a toasty start to the weekend. The coast will start to see clouds move back in by the late afternoon and in the evening.

As the next storm approaches, thunderstorm chances start to pop up in the Cascades, mainly on Sunday and Monday. Speaking of Father’s Day, we’ll see clouds increasing through the latter half of the day, but overall its a dry forecast for most of your plans with Dad out and about. Highs will be generally mild, in the mid to upper 70s.

Next week, the storm (that’s been sitting offshore for most of the weekend) will slowly shift inland and bring some solid rain chances for all of Western Oregon and most of the Northwest from Monday through Thursday. Highs will drop into the mid to low 70s on Monday and the University of Oregon commencment may see some light drizzle or a passing shower. Tuesday and Wednesday look wet for sure with highs cooler, back into the upper 60s and low 70s.

Have a great weekend!

HARRISBURG, Ore. — Residents are still talking about the funnel cloud that touched down in Harrisburg on Thursday.

People we spoke to say the day started just like any other, but the weather turned bizarre shortly before 5 p.m when the funnel cloud made its presence known. Friends and neighbors who spotted it immediately began capturing the phenomenon in pictures and video.

Although the funnel cloud only lasted about five minutes, some residents say that was enough time to make them worry about what might happen if it touched down.

“It would be nice to know or have a town meeting or something so that we know what we should be doing in a situation like that,” said resident Tiffani Darcy. “As far as I know, we’re not equipped for it. That’s a scary thought.”

Harrisburg wasn’t the only Oregon town to see unusual weather on Thursday; an EF-1 tornado ripped through McMinnville, tearing the roof off one building and damaging several other structures. No one was hurt in either case.

Sally Markos with the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency said that this spring has been one of the driest on record, despite the recent rain, and open burning will become more dangerous as the weather continues to warm up. “Illegal burning during the dry summer months increases the risk of wildfires that can damage property and destroy homes,” she said.

Residents who burn during the closed season could be fined as much as $2,500, or possibly even more. Instead, LRAPA encourages people to take their wood and yard debris to area recycling centers. Eugene and Springfield residents also have the option of curbside yard debris pickup with their garbage service.

Burning season is expected to resume on October 1. For more information, visit LRAPA’s website.

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. An EF-1 tornado ripped through a few buildings with wind speeds of nearly 85 mph in McMinnville Thursday afternoon. The most extensive damage was to an auto supply company with damage to a few storage garages. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the storm. The EF-1 rating would place estimated winds from the tornado at 85-90 mph. Assessment teams from the National Weather Service Office in Portland estimated the tornado was on the ground three separate times from 4:30-4:35pm with some spots seeing EF-0 damage mainly downed trees.

In addition to the tornado, three separate funnel clouds were reported in Hillsboro, near Corvallis, and Harrisburg Thursday afternoon. There was no confirmation at this time that any of the funnels established contact with the ground.
