Celebrating National Young Readers Week

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Students who got sent to the principal’s office Tuesday at Douglas Gardens Elementary School in Springfield had to head outside.

Principal Valerie King was stationed in the school yard with a rocking chair and a tent reading from first bell to last. That’s because it’s National Young Readers Week.

The event challenges school principals to spend all day reading in an unusual location. It’s all about promoting literacy.

“You’ve got to make it fun. You got to make everything fun. And for them to see that adults enjoy it, it’s not a chore, it’s what we love to do…I think it’s really important” King said.

National Young Readers Week was founded by Pizza Hut. If you’d like to learn more about the program, click here.
