EUGENE, Ore. — Thousands of people made their way to Eugene Water Electric Board’s annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday.
The event came just in time for local shoppers as the city of Eugene will soon ban plastic bags from retail stores. Saturday’s event focused on gearing people up for the coming change.
Organizers spent most of the day handing out free reusable bags to residents to prepare for the ban.
“What we’d like to do is to not make it seem so scary, just to make some small lifestyle changes. The kind of light bulb you use, or carrying a reusable bag,” said event coordinator Steve Remington.
The plastic bag ban in Eugene goes into effect on May 1. Paper bags will still be available for a fee of 5 cents.
