Cell Phone “Ping” Helps to Find Hunter

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — The Lane County Sheriff’s Office rescued a hunter after receiving a 911 call from the man Monday morning.

The Sheriff’s Office receive a call around 9 a.m. from Wayne Marney, 56, who was elk hunting near Cottage Grove Lake. Marney had a medical issue and told the Sheriff’s Dispatcher he needed assistance.

Marney provided brief directions to his location. The Lane County Sheriff’s Forest Patrol, Oregon State Police and the Cottage Grove Fire Department responded and assisted in locating Marney using his cell phone to “ping” his location.

Responders found Marney responsive but in wet clothing and suffering from moderate hypothermia. He was transported to Sacred Health Medical Center at RiverBend for treatment. Family members say his condition is improving.
