Centennial Gets Full-Time P.E. Teacher

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A Springfield elementary school that was just named a model school is also focusing on fitness for its kids.

Centennial Elementary is the only elementary school in its district to have a full-time P.E. teacher. The new principal, Joy Koenig, applied for a $50,000 grant to get the position funded.

“They’ve got to be running every day. They’ve got to be taught the fitness benefits of life. I mean, they’re so important because if you have a fit body your brain will be better functioning. You’ll think better and think more clearly,” said Greg McGowan, Centennial Elementary P.E. Teacher.

This is the first time in years the school has had a P.E. teacher. The grant is called Physical Education Expansion, Peek 8. It’s funded through tobacco dollars.
