CERT Graduates Practice Disaster Drills

EUGENE, Ore. — More than 50 community members spent Saturday morning practicing disaster response drills.

It served as the graduation for the CERT program, a free series of classes anyone can take to learn how to help out in case of a disaster.

Students spend the first part of training in the classroom, then Saturday they got their first chance out in the field practicing real life scenarios.

“They come out and are performing search and rescue, extinguishing fires, go through a rubble pile, and then also doing a triage of over 40 moulage victims,” said Battalion Chief Lance Lighty of the Eugene Fire Department.

With this graduating class there are now more than 900 certified CERT members in our community, all trained to respond to natural disasters.
