DEADWOOD, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Fisheries and Wildlife plans to stop releasing Steelhead Trout in some tributaries of the Siuslaw River.

ODFW plans on reducing Steelhead Trout in Lake Creek from 15,000 to zero, leaving many residents feeling blindsided.

For the past five years, the trout were released into the creek as part of a hatchery program. It provided ample amounts of fish for residents and others who made the creek a destination for fishing.

Community members said they’re worried that taking away the hatchery could hurt local business.

“This caused a little concern here because there are more businesses on Lake Creek,” said resident Leslie Benscoter.

Residents plan to meet with the Oregon Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to discuss their concerns.
