Construction Crew Causes Gas Leak

EUGENE, Ore. — A construction crew hit a natural gas line in west Eugene, Tuesday morning, and forced people to stay in their homes for more than two hours.

Eugene Fire and NW Natural Gas crews responded to Shirley Street, where construction crews completely severed a major gas line in the neighborhood.

“A residential line is like a 3/4 inch pipe and a half a pound of pressure; this is a two-inch line with about 40 pounds of pressure in that pipe,” said Craig Shelby, Eugene Fire Department.

Northwest Natural Gas crews had to completely dig out the line to turn it off. The repairs took about an hour but they were able to patch the line.
