The World Health Organization defines gaming disorder as a "persistent or recurrent behavior pattern of sufficient severity to result in significant impairment in personal, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning."

However, not all experts agree that the addiction should be labeled as a disorder. According to research at Iowa State University, about 9% of children who play video games in the United States have an addiction to gaming. This same research found similar numbers in children around the globe.

Psychologists believe the increase in the amount of technology and internet access available to children today are contributing factors to gaming addictions.
