FLORENCE, Ore. -- Despite the stormy conditions on the Florence coast early Sunday morning, several surfers took advantage of the waves.
John Franklin was one of the surfers who braved the storm to enjoy his favorite sport.
"Today is an extreme love of surfing because it's not good conditions as you can see."
Franklin has been catching waves for the last 20 years.
"It's just super fun, " he said. "They say only a surfer knows the feeling after you've caught a wave and actually rode the thing. It's just a really good feeling."
While he loves the sport he admits that stormy conditions can be dangerous.
"Yesterday I smashed up a board and almost hit myself here out on the rocks, " he said.
He's not the only one who likes to take precatuion. James Matthews, a Florence resident, showed up with his family to check out the storm.
"You're so small compared to [Mother Nature]," Matthews said. "Don't go out there, there are signs posted, there are warnings."
Franklin encourages surfers to make safety a top priority.
"Know your currents," he said. "There are situtions you can get in where you can't get back into the beach.
