COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- A local family said they ordered a limousine for their uncle’s funeral, but what arrived was a party bus.
The funeral was for Dennis Deere, a beloved uncle and Vietnam veteran. His nephew Jon Summers said they knew he would have liked to have a limo at his funeral, so they ordered a Mercedes Sprinter, which is pictured below.
Summers said they knew it was a non-traditional limo, but they didn’t expect it to look quite so much like a party bus.
“It was devastating. My sister was the one who coordinated it, and she was absolutely devastated,” Summers said. “She was surprised, shocked, embarrassed -- everything in between. We just didn't think it was appropriate."
Sunshine Limo Service is the company that provided the car. They said they had confirmed with the family the specific car they were sending. They said they actually gave the family a special two-hour deal because they usually only rent four-hour slots or more.
“We did all of that, and as far as we knew everything was fine,” said Merryn Gregory, the general manager at Sunshine Limo Service.
When the driver arrived in Cottage Grove to pick up the family, they said they were shocked by what he was driving. Summers said the driver offered to drive to Eugene and switch out the cars, but they called him back about halfway through his drive, saying they needed to get to the funeral, so he came back and drove them.
Summers said he was frustrated to later learn that they had been charged the full $270. He said the product wasn't what they were promised and the driver was gone for half an hour.
“You held up a procession because you guys made a mistake, and I just simply thought that they would have just owned the situation and not charged us,” Summers said.
Summers said he did ask Sunshine Limo Service for his money back, but they said that's not a reasonable request because they didn't do anything wrong.
“If they had said, 'Look, I'm sorry, we didn't realize what this vehicle was,' and had chosen not to take the service, we absolutely would've refunded them,” Gregory said.
Gregory said the family might have been confused because you are able to stand inside the vehicle, but they said there's no flashing lights or safety poles, which differs from their party buses.
