Douglas County law enforcement run torch relay for Special Olympics

Though the Oregon summer games have been cancelled, law enforcement agencies in the county still wanted to show their support for the athletes.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Douglas County law enforcement agencies will be running the torch for Special Olympics Oregon athletes Thursday.

The run usually happens before the annual Oregon summer games in Corvallis, but the event was cancelled this year due to financial concerns.

Nonetheless, the run will start in Myrtle Creek and go from one police department to the next to support the athletes.

Here is a full rundown of the torch relay on Thursday:

• 7 a.m. Start -- Myrtle Creek Police Department begins at Cherry/North Pacific Highway
• 8:20 a.m. -- Myrtle Creek PD hands off to Winston PD at Quick Stop Market, 6453 NE Dole Road
• 9:15 a.m. -- Special Olympics Athletes/LE Officers Meet and Greet, Riverbend Park, Winston
• 9:30 a.m. -- Winston PD Continues on route with athletes and any other officers who wish to join in
• 9:45 a.m. -- Winston PD hands off to Douglas County Sheriff's Office at Pepsi Road
• 10:45 a.m. -- Douglas County SO hands off to Roseburg PD at Southgate area of Roseburg
• 11:55 a.m. -- Roseburg PD hands off to Oregon State Police at Roseburg OSP Office
• 12:45 p.m. -- Oregon State Police hands off to Sutherlin PD at Crown Homes, 1710 S Calapooia St., Sutherlin
• 1:30 p.m. -- Douglas County Torch Run is completed in Oakland.

Andrea Zielinski with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said there will be a meet and greet with the athletes and law enforcement at Riverbend Park in Winston.

“From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. they’re going to have all kinds of games and activities for families," Zielinski said. "So, go down there and say thank you to all those wonderful athletes.”

The run will start at 7 Thursday morning in Myrtle Creek, going up Highway 99 to Oakland that afternoon.

The public is welcome to gather and cheer on the law enforcement officers.
