PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- A homeless Portland man has been charged with murder in the death of a woman whose body was found in his van.

A probable cause affidavit filed by a Portland police detective says 58-year-old Terry Hickman went to a friend's house Thursday and said he choked a woman until she stopped breathing.

Detectives found Hickman, and they say he consented to a search of the van. Inside, police found the body of 29-year-old Dallas Boyd. Court records from an unrelated matter indicate she had been homeless this year.

The Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined she died of homicidal violence.

Hickman was assigned a court-appointed attorney at his initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

Court records show Hickman's record includes at least nine felony convictions, and six misdemeanors.
