EUGENE, Ore. -- Hundreds turned out to the 29th annual Whiteaker Community Thanksgiving Dinner.

Event coordinator, Beverly Farfan, said many people spent the night in line to be the first in line the next morning.

"They got sleeping bags, blankets, tarps, and all those things they need," said Farfan.

In addition to the free giveaways, this year people were also given flu shots and free massages.

They also had a barking lot, where they gave away leashes for their loyal companions.

Farfan said the Whiteaker Community Thanksgiving Dinner started in 1974 and has been a tradition since.

"They got a hold of an agency looking for people looking for a place to go and from then, it grew and grew," she said.

Organizers said the event is truly a community effort. They said the cooks consisted of volunteers and culinary students from the Lane Community College.

"I think it's just wonderful the community comes together and feeds those who maybe don't have the money and the budget," said attendee, Scott Carlin.
