He's carried that service into retirement, now helping other veterans get their benefits.

"He worked for the Veterans Service Office Lane County as a County employee for about 10 years, and he retired from that...he does it now on a volunteer basis and he really took to it," said Barker's wife, Debbie.

"One of the things I love about this job and one of the reasons I keep doing it is just the good feeling you get when a Veteran comes back and says 'I got hearing aids, I can actually hear again.' It really touches your heart and you really love to do that," said Barker.

"When I retired from the Marine Corps, I was a Master Gunnery Sergeant E9 and my primary job was to take care of the troops and that's what I feel like I'm still doing. They're still out there, they still need help and that's what I'm here for," said Barker.
