Controlled Burn near Fern Ridge

EUGENE, Ore. — The Army Corps of Engineers performed a controlled ecological burn just off Spires Lane near Fern Ridge Reservoir Thursday.

Crews were originally planning to burn an 80-acre lot near the intersection of Highway 126 and Fisher Road, but the recent rains called for a change of plans. Organizers say these prescribed burns require very specific conditions.

“Partly it’s to meet the purposes of the burn, but partly it’s to make sure we’re minimizing our impacts on human healthy and safety, keeping air quality as high as we can while still meeting our conservation goals,” said Wes Messinger, Army Corps of Engineers Botanist.

Crews sent up two weather balloons to check winds and waited for more than three hours before even doing a test burn.
