Coos Bay Woman Drowns in Coquille River

GAYLORD, Ore. — A Coos Bay woman drowned in the Coquille River Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency responders arrived to find her trapped underwater two miles north of the Gaylord Bridge on the South Fork of the Coquille River along Powers Highway. They say her life vest had been caught on her pontoon boat when the boat got wedged into a tree in the river.

Investigators say 25-year-old Kristle Volin, who works for Coquille Watershed, was rafting with ODFW employee Jeff Jackson, of Florence, to identify areas of the river for possible restoration projects.

While Volin tried to avoid a dangerous part of the water, her raft got caught by a tree, overturned and snagged her live jacket, trapping her underneath the water.

Volin was pronounced dead after she was taken to Bay Area Hospital. Jackson was not injured.
