Corvallis Plastic Bag Ban Takes Effect

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Residents of Corvallis will see some changes this new year, including no more plastic bags at stores.

The ban on plastic bags goes into effect Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013.

The ordinance, which was passed last July, takes effect in two phases. The first phase is for larger companies–those that have 50 or more employees. The policy takes effect for those businesses with fewer than 50 employees next July.

So starting Jan. 1, all plastic bags will be prohibited in large grocery stores, and customers using paper bags will be charged five cents per bag.

A similar ban in Eugene takes effect later in the spring.
