COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — All over western Oregon people found special ways to honor our military men and women on Memorial Day. Cottage Grove residents held a special ceremony to remember what’s important in life and the people who fight so hard to keep us safe.
Patriotism. Honor. And remembrance. Those themes all rang true throughout the memorial ceremony Monday morning.
“Our brothers and our sisters from the revolutionary war to today’s conflicts have sacrificed their blood, time and physical energies to protect this our beloved land,” said Leonard Waitman, World War II veteran.
For those who packed the Armory, it was a time to reflect, a time that memories hit close to home.
“We never brought them home and we still remember them. They, they’re a little different,” Waitman said.
After the ceremony, the community took part in a remembrance walk where they wreaths were placed in the river to honor veterans who sacrificed their lives.
Some of those who came out in support weren’t veterans, but children showing support for a family member.
“I do remember that dad taught us integrity and I think that’s probably what he carried him through his service and what he carries with him through his life,” said Angela Pershern, Cottage Grove resident.
