EUGENE, Ore– A debate that’s lasted through the summer is over. Downtown Eugene’s exclusion zone is here to stay.
After hearing hours of public comments, the City Council decided to amend the controversial zone for at least another year on Monday night.
More than 40 people weighed in on the zone that limits people who commit certain crimes from returning to downtown. When it came time to vote on extending the zone, the council was deadlocked.
Mayor Kitty Piercy cast the deciding vote. Her approval to extend the ordiance came with some alterations, inlcuidng reducing the number of crimes on the list, to include more serious offenses.
The downtown exclusion zone is now set to expire in November 2013.
