EUGENE, Ore. — The Eugene City Council wants to start a conversation surrounding illegal fireworks.
At least four councilors agreed it seems the problem with illegal fireworks being set off in the city is getting worse. Mayor Kitty Piercy told the council she thinks this is becoming a safety issue for homes and property.
Councilor Clair Syrett asked the council take up a discussion about this issue at a future work session.
“You know there is a fire hazard when you have illegal fireworks that shoot up into the air and they can land in trees and on people’s roofs,” said Syrett. “There’s that issue as well as the real quality of life impact when folks are basically setting off M-80’s around the corner from your house.”
Two Eugene residents also commented during the public comment session pleading with the city to do something about the issue.
