County Grants Downtown Development Lease

EUGENE, Ore. — A major proposal to develop part of downtown Eugene received the green light Tuesday.

After months of talks, the Lane County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a 99-year lease agreement with developer Brian Obie.

The 5th Street Public Market developer wants to create a $67 million housing development with retail space, a movie theater and grocery store at the corner of East Sixth Avenue and Oak Street. He says it makes sense for the city of Eugene.

“There’s no question that housing is destined in our mind for this at all social economic levels. That’s one of the great things about this,” Obie said.

No word on when they’ll break ground on the development.
