Crash Causes Life-Threatening Injuries to Eugene Man

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — A man drove into a light pole in Springfield and got rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It happened on South A Street.

You can still see the skid marks left on the sidewalk before the car finally hit the light pole.

Around 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, police say 47-year-old Brian D. Piper was speeding when he lost control at the curve and slid sideways into the pole.

Emergency crews had to extricate him from the car. As of Monday afternoon, Piper was in critical condition.

“I came out the fire department, paramedics, police blocking off traffic. Somebody getting their roof cut off their car,” said neighbor Chuck Davis.

Neighbors say the curve on that section of A Street is a known trouble spot.

They’re not surprised when people driving too fast or under the influence cause damage.
