Crews Add Bicycle Lane to Willamette St.

EUGENE, Ore. — Cyclists have a new option to get from downtown Eugene to south Eugene.

Construction crews reworked South Willamette Street from 19th to 23rd Avenues.

The work included reducing the road to one lane, adding a new bike lane and preserving street parking.

Cyclists say while they expect the traffic will remain high, the new lanes are a positive.

“I used to ride down the sidewalk which isn’t safe either, so having the bike lane there I’d be more inclined to use the street,” said bicyclist Steve Hejna.

The money for the $936,000 job came from a number of areas.

Construction crews also re-striped the bike lanes on 20th Avenue and Oak Street.
