Crews Limit Arson Damage

EUGENE, Ore. — Eugene Police Department closed a road, and took a man into custody, following a fire near the University of Oregon.

The fire was near I-5 off of Franklin St. EPD shut down Franklin at Walnut St. while fire crews cleaned up and investigated the suspected arson.

By 8:30 p.m., flames nearly 15 feet high started to take over the nearby hillside. Officers say the blaze started at the base of a telephone pole.

“I don’t know the extent of the damage to the phone pole, but it involved the brush along the hillside halfway up to the houses,” said EPD Sergeant Jason Berreth. “There were no houses or buildings damaged.”

Police say EWEB will need to assess damage to the pole. A man is in custody in connection with the incident, but his name was not released. Police said the fire was started during a dispute, but that investigation was still ongoing.
