Races in the heart of downtown by mile-runners and hard-charging bicyclists will kick off the 3rd annual Eugene Sunday Streets festivities on July 21.
The TrackTown City Center Mile and Rolf Prima Downtown Crit will debut this year, treating spectators to close-up viewing of some of the country’s elite milers and fearless cyclists.
In the TrackTown City Center Mile, high school, open/masters, and championship runners will compete in races on a closed, one-mile loop on downtown streets. It’s the perfect setting for a classic race, said Mike Reilly, CEO of TrackTown USA.
“The opportunity to combine probably the most famous event in the entire sport of track and field – the mile –with bringing it into the center and heart of the city is just a fabulous opportunity,” Reilly said.
The Rolf Prima Downtown Criterium is a set of cycling races on the same one-mile course. Riders hitting speeds up to 30 mph can transform every turn into high drama. There are categories for novice through expert.
Racing will begin at 7 a.m. and continue through the morning. Entry for both events is open to the public, but space is limited. Get details and register and www.racedowntown.com.
The TrackTown City Center Mile and Rolf Prima Downtown Crit are presented by dark30 sports in partnership with Eugene Sunday Streets.
“We think spectators and athletes are going to love the downtown setting and the close proximity of racers and spectators,” said Steve Cash, dark30 sports’ owner. “With TrackTown USA as a title sponsor for an elite run, and packs of cyclists hitting the corners at full speed in the crit, this will be a crowd-pleasing event.”
