EUGENE, Ore. — Lane County’s district attorney calls a trooper-involved shooting that happened near Yachats in May justified.
Oregon State Police shot and killed 18-year-old Sam Mullane as the SWAT team tried to serve a search warrant related to an assault.
Investigators say Mullane was armed and moved to take cover behind a shed and possibly harm the officers.
“They did everything they could orally to stop and when it was apparent that they couldn’t stop and that he was unwilling to stop. And as I said, it was clear that he was hearing them because what he was saying in response to his directives is eff you, eff you, eff you,” said Lane County District Attorney Alex Gardner.
Three of the four troopers fired their guns at the same time. Two bullets hit Mullane who died at the scene.
