Death Investigation West of Veneta

VENETA, Ore. — ¬†Authorities have begun an investigation into the death of a man who fatally shot himself after being pulled over by Oregon State Police just west of Veneta.

Just before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, a state police sergeant stopped a car on Highway 36, about five miles west of Veneta. As the sergeant was getting out of the patrol car, the vehicle sped forward, traveled into a ditch and collided with a tree.

When the sergeant got to the crashed vehicle, he saw the lone male driver suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the request of Oregon State Police, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office has begun an investigation.
