Detectives Expand Voyeur Investigation

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Springfield police went back to the home of a suspected voyeur Thursday to look for more computer equipment. They say an initial search turned up several troubling letters written by Dana Bishop to his 10-year-old victim.

Officers served a new search warrant Thursday. Originally detectives say this case was about illegal surveillance, but over the past couple weeks, their investigation revealed clues that show Bishop was much more invested in his victim than they originally thought.

Detectives say the first clue was the letter they found on Bishop’s laptop that was presented to the judge at his arraignment. KEZI 9 News does not know the letter’s contents, only that it included suggestive romantic statements about the young girl who lived next door.

Then further forensic searches turned up more letters just like it.

“I think the more we talked about this case, the more we realized that there might be more stuff out there. So we wanted to make sure we covered out bases, so we went out there to make sure we got everything,” said Det. David Grice, Springfield Police Department.

So detectives went back to Bishop’s house Thursday and confiscated car-fulls of additional computer equipment, video tapes and pictures. But they say until they find any physical evidence of him taping or photographing the victim or other physical evidence, the letters are all they have. Detectives say those aren’t technically illegal.

“It’s not a crime. I just think it’s more. We’re just adding more evidence that shows that he’s got an infatuation with this girls and he was really focused on her,” Grice said.

What detectives collected Thursday though will give them plenty more to look through, and depending on what they find more charges could be filed.

So what happens to Bishop while they do these searches? He’s currently being held in the Springfield Jail without bail, which the judge decided based on the safety of his victim and her family, but he has the option to request another hearing and ask to be let out. Otherwise, he’ll stay in jail until his trial set for May.
