DisOrient Film Fest Celebrates 9 Years

Bijou Art CinemasEUGENE, Ore. — The DisOrient Asian American Film Festival is celebrating its ninth year starting Thursday.

The event will run through this Sunday at Bijou Art Cinemas and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.

Organizers say the social-justice film fest looks to unsettle and overturn pervasive stereotypes of Asians and Asian-Americans, just one of the reasons behind the event’s name.

“It’s the Asian Pacific Islander experience. We are not orientals as oftentimes characterized by the mass media and the general public. So the term dis is like a kid, kid slang. We’re dissing the term orient,” said Anselmo Villanueva, Festival Executive Director.
