EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon’s Duck mascot is no longer the Donald Duck we all know from Disney.
This week, the university and Disney part ways. Administrators say they reached an agreement to transfer oversight of the mascot to the university. That means they won’t have to go through Disney anymore if they wanted to use the mascot for things like special appearances.
“The duck may have opportunities to compete in other competitions with other mascots and things and other opportunities that haven’t been possible in the past,” said UO Spokesperson Julie Brown.
Administrators say they will continue using the Duck on apparel merchandise. They say this is part of a routine check-in with the company and had little to do with some controversy stirred up with the release of last year’s “I Love My Ducks” video.
