Electricity Bill Phone Scam

EUGENE, Ore. — The Eugene Police Department says there is a phone scam in the area that’s targeting Latinos.

Victims describe the phone calls as very aggressive. The caller has used a number of scare-tactics, but in a lot of cases he disguises himself as someone from a local utility company.

Speaking in Spanish — the caller threatens to immediately cut-off the victim’s electricity unless they pay up. He usually tells them to get a cash card or wire money.

Office Tom Schneider said, “Remind your friends who might be particularly vulnerable in any way, and let them know this is going on, and that it’s probably a scam. Check it out, and do not send these people money.”

EPD says to always call the utility company to verify the claim before making any payments.
